Since I really began playing again in earnest back in September, I was surprised at how quickly my old skills came back. In mere days, the fingers were feeling good again, and I more or less could play like I used to, when I would hold forth at various venues in NW Ohio, from Easy Street Cafe to Manhattan's in Toledo. I could "make a gig," as they say.
However, the goal here is not to simply reattain my old style with all of its warts and problems. The goal is of course to improve upon these fu…

Bobby Darin. He swaggered, snapped his fingers and shrugged his shoulders to jazz, blues, gospel, pop, folk, rhythm & blues and Country Western. He was the first great cross-over artist before the term was even phrased. He had a sleepy-eyed charisma that kept his audience spellbound. He possessed a natural sense of rhythm and vocal timing that was unmatched among male vocalists. He did incredible impersonations, could dance with the best of them, and played any instrument he picked up like i…

Let's jump right back into talking about some albums that have been important to me as both a jazz performer and listener.
4. Michael Brecker (Pat Metheny on guitar): Time is of the Essence
The organ/guitar combination has always been one of my favorites (possibly because I haven't had the pleasure of actually participating in one of these yet), and here we find a sort of modern take on it that really works. The originals here really do capture at once the spirit of contemporary jazz and old s…

I've noticed that while the jazz guitar life network has plenty of members that there doesn't seem to be tons of activity, and I find myself spamming the news stream with lots of stuff. Oh well. I don't mind being in small little cubbie holes on the internet. Sometimes a small group of good folks is better than countless millions anyway.
So I thought I would blog about some of my favorite jazz guitar albums and how they've influenced me and why. I won't have time to do this in one post so this…

Last weekend was my first chance to get out and about in downtown Raleigh since I moved here (being married with a little girl means that I have to have good reasons to go out without them!).
As is usually the case in places that are not NYC, LA or even Chicago, San Francisco or Austin, the scene is kind of hard to find. Day one of the weekend saw me and my friend (fabulous NW Ohio double bassist Jason Gahler) going to Amra's, a "jazz venue" cigar bar. Well, the band was very good (and the ciga…

So I've learned "The Song is You" fairly well. Well ok, I still feel like I can practice it for months and months, that is how it goes with any tune in jazz. But my focus here is on really zeroing in on one tune and practicing many different aspects of it, from memorizing the basic melody and changes to chord melody to really anything I can think of to improve my fluidity on the tune.
However, I can't spend months and months literally on one tune, as this would get boring, as much as I like tha…

I gotta get to practicin', but let me just say that I have rediscovered my passion for jazz guitar after a necessary sabbatical to find myself a fun day job to provide for my family. My goal is to use the freedom provided by not worrying about the money aspect of the music to truly become an elite musician.

Jazz Guitar Life mourns the passing of a truly great innovator, inventor and Guitarist who had single handedly changed the course of recorded music and instrumental acumen. The Les Paul sound, along with the man himself, has become synonymous with great tone, attitude, personality and “balls”, and will forever grace the musical landscape of our youth and beyond. There was nothing more potent, when I was growing as a young Guitarist, than a Gibson Les Paul coupled with a Marshall half stack. This…

Howard Roberts: Legendary Guitarist
One of the most versatile and talented guitarists of all time was the late, great Howard Roberts. Roberts was primarily a jazz guitarist and he fronted some legendary jazz combos with many of the greatest players in the world back in the 1950-80s.
But what made Howard extra special was his ability to play various genres of music on guitar, including pop, rock and blues. He was probably the most sought-after session guitarist in the industry from the early 19…

The Jazz community has never promoted or marketed their art and craft at the level or with the same intensity as other musical idioms. This is not to comment one way or another on the musical significance of jazz versus rock - country vs pop etc.
As an example, country music has an enormously popular and important tradition called Fan Day. This is basically a big convention for the fans to meet, up close and personal, their country music idols. Autographs are given, merchandise is sold, picture…

Trioisms
Dan Arcamone (2008)
March 2009
By Matthew Warnock
New England-based guitarist Dan Arcamone delivers a boundary breaking, genre-defying album with his debut, Trioisms. The album features Arcamone's trio of drummer Tom Ash and bassist Rich Zurkowski, who are constantly pushing the guitarist to new heights of creativity in his solos, as well as delivering memorable improvisations themselves. By bringing in influences from rock, funk, blues and jazz, Arcamone has created an album that is…

I'm performing every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00-2:30 with bassist Bill "Magic" Lavender Bey at Stars Bistro in Washington DC's Dupont Circle neighborhood. The Dupont area is known for having many brunch venues, but Stars, located at 2120 P Street, is the only restaurant featuring live jazz. Hope those of you in the area can come by some time.

I am happy to announce my recording -
The Russ Spiegel Jazz Orchestra: Transplants - is now finished and available. This project has taken almost 3 years and more money than I care to admit but I am proud of the results: 9 songs performed by a 17-man strong band, 6 originals, 3 vocal tracks, and all arrangements by yours truly. The new date for release and CD release party is set for
Tuesday, April 7th at the Gershwin Hotel located at 27th St. & Madison Ave. in New York…
